About Me

tips for quick moves and unpacking

As the wife of a soldier, I have learned a lot about packing and moving on little notice. Oftentimes, when my husband receives orders to move to a new base, it is something that must be followed out in just a few short weeks. After moving six times in five years, I have gotten the packing and moving process down to a science. I know exactly how to pack boxes so that I have everything that I need the minute that we arrive at the new home and I know how to unpack so that I only have to touch things once after we arrive. Find my tips here on this blog.

4 Tips For Working With Your Mover

If you haven't moved in years, you may wonder what your experience will be like when moving day comes. You can ask the moving company everything you need to know when they come to your home to give you an estimate of costs, so be sure to have your questions ready. Here are four things you might be interested to know about moving and working with movers.

1. Don't Risk Putting Things In Trash Bags

If you've moved yourself or friends in the past, you may have used trash bags for a lot of your stuff rather than boxes. Movers don't usually like that, and they may even prohibit it. That means you'll have to do last-minute packing, and you may even pay a premium for boxes from the moving company.

Always put things in boxes, preferably moving boxes that are strong and of standard sizes so they stack safely. Be sure to label the boxes too, so you know what's inside them and where they go in your new home.

2. Learn How To Cut Costs

Movers will often pack everything up for you, but that will cost a lot more than if you pack everything yourself. You should plan on doing as much work as possible yourself if you want to save money on your move.

Also, if the movers charge by the hour, then the quicker they can move, the less it will cost. Make it convenient by packing properly. Rather than have them load several small light boxes, put the boxes in a bigger box so they only have to handle one box instead of many.

If the movers charge by weight, declutter your home aggressively before you start packing to move. The fewer things you have, the less it should cost to move.

3. Tip The Crew And Provide Snacks

Moving is hard work, especially when it's hot and humid, rainy, or cold outside. You may want to offer drinks and snacks for the crew to eat on breaks or when they finish. Tipping is also an acceptable practice for the moving crew. Take the number of hours they worked into account along with the number in the crew to decide how much to tip each worker in cash.

4. Be Ready For Things To Go Out The Door

When you talk to the mover when you get your estimate, ask about all the things you need to leave for the moving crew to do and what you need to do yourself so everything is ready to go the night before the move. The movers may prefer to handle disconnecting gas appliances and wrapping furniture and appliances themselves. They may also take apart the furniture that needs it so everything stacks on the truck properly.

However, you'll want to have everything boxed up and easy to get to so they can start carrying boxes out the door when they arrive. Just be sure to keep the things you'll need such as documents, cash, valuables, personal items, and a change of clothing in your car so they stay with you.
