About Me

tips for quick moves and unpacking

As the wife of a soldier, I have learned a lot about packing and moving on little notice. Oftentimes, when my husband receives orders to move to a new base, it is something that must be followed out in just a few short weeks. After moving six times in five years, I have gotten the packing and moving process down to a science. I know exactly how to pack boxes so that I have everything that I need the minute that we arrive at the new home and I know how to unpack so that I only have to touch things once after we arrive. Find my tips here on this blog.

An Overview Of Storage Boxes Materials

If you need a self-storage unit, you should know that it is best to keep your items in storage boxes rather than throw them on the floor of the storage unit. Storage boxes are available in a wide variety of materials, some of which are discussed below.

Metal Boxes

Metal storage boxes are strong and tough. You can stack several metal boxes without damaging the items inside them. You can use metal boxes for things like metal tools that might damage boxes made from other materials. However, some metal boxes are relatively heavy and complicate loading, unloading, and handling of storage items. Also, metal boxes can corrode, so they should not be used to store items that can be damaged by rust, such as clothes.

Plastic Boxes

Plastic storage boxes are some of the most common, mainly because they are relatively cheap. Plastic is also light, watertight, and airtight when properly closed. Plastic storage boxes also come in various colors; there are even transparent ones that let you see what is inside without opening the box, just like glass. However, you need thick and strong plastic boxes if you plan on stacking them in storage.

Fabric Bags

There are also storage bags made of fabric. These bags are suitable for holding small and light items, such as household decorations. However, fabrics are easily affected by moisture and cannot be stacked. Pests can also attack such bags and damage the items inside. That is why it is advisable to place fabric bags inside other sturdier boxes, such as cardboard, for better protection.

Cardboard

There are two types of cardboard boxes. There are cardboard boxes made from thin materials that cannot hold heavy items. Then there are strong cardboard boxes that can hold heavy weights that can even be stacked. Some of the boxes are collapsible, which makes them easy to store when empty. Note that cardboard boxes can decay when exposed to moisture, so you should only use them in dry environments.

Glass Boxes

Glass storage bins mostly come in the form of jars, but others are also constructed in the classical shape of boxes. Glass is relatively heavy, so loading them with heavy items can lead to handling complications. One of the best features of glass is that it is airtight; as long as your glass jar has a fitting lid, you don't have to worry about moisture or air intrusion. However, glass can also be relatively fragile, so it needs careful handling.
